Urban Glass Visit

Art ready students viewing Alli Hoag’s The Distant of the Moon exhibit at Urban Glass.

Another artist we’ve met is Victoria Calabro who makes various artworks with glass. We went to Urban Glass, a glass museum and workshop, which is in the same building as BRIC, a video studio and gallery. We saw different works of art that involved glass and learned the tedious and difficult process of making an artwork with glass. Patience is a vital skill that is needed when working on this type of art and it can take a very long time to have a finalized piece of art. As we took a tour learning the different steps of designing a piece of glass we were able to get a small experience with etching our own piece of glass. Each of us was given a glass cup to create different designs while using tape. After creating our tape designs we went to etch our glass using a sand blasting machine. The results were beautiful. We normally think of artwork with paintings but it’s amazing to see uncommon mediums being used to create beautiful works of art. – Jemila
