MENTOR BIOS

MICHAEL PAUL BRITTO, Photo/video art
Downtown Community Television (DCTV), 87 Lafayette Street, Manhattan; Trains: N/R/Q/J/Z/6 or A/C/E to Canal St.

Michael Paul Britto’s work addresses the misconceptions and assumptions surrounding people of color in the United States. It ranges from videos to digital photography, sculpture, and performance. He has had residencies at the New Museum in New York as well as Smack Mellon, The Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation and LMCC. Michael was been featured in shows at El Museo del Barrio, The Studio Museum of Harlem, The Zacheta National Gallery in Warsaw, The Kitchen and the Victoria and Albert Museum in England. Michael graduated with a BA from the City College of New York. He has experience working with young adults in his positions as a high school media teacher, and as an instructor at DCTV. www.brittofied.com

ESTABAN DEL VALLE, Painting/Film/Animation/Drawing/Sculpture
Smack Mellon, 92 Plymouth Street: Train: F to York Street

Originally from Chicago, Esteban del Valle is an interdisciplinary artist living and working in Brooklyn, where he maintains an active studio and mural practice. He completed his MFA in painting at RISD in 2009, where he received a Presidential Scholarship and the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship. Del Valle has produced murals nationally and his work has been featured on HGTV, NY1 News, News 12 Brooklyn, and the New York Times and has been included various exhibitions including Pulso: Art of the Americas at KCAD in Grand Rapids, MI, EMPIRIA at Superchief Gallery in NYC, Liars, Actors, and Believers at Cabinet in Brooklyn, NY, and the 2009 New Insight exhibition at Art Chicago. Del Valle has also been the recipient of several visual arts residencies and fellowships including Hub-Bub, ISLAND, the Dejarssi Program, the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture, and the Fine Arts Work Center. www.estabandelvalle.com

NATALIA NAKAZAWA, Painting/Drawing/Mixed Media/Installation

Natalia Nakazawa is a Brooklyn-based artist working in drawing, painting and installation. Her work has been recently exhibited at The Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (New York, NY); California College of the Arts (San Francisco, CA); PLAySPACE Gallery (San Francisco, CA); Casa de la Ciudad (Oaxaca, Mexico); Queens Museum of Art (Queens, NY); and ISE Cultural Foundation (Soho, NY). She received her MFA from California College of the Arts in 2010, a MSEd from Queens College (CUNY) in 2008, and her BFA from Rhode Island School of Design in 2004. Natalia is a museum educator at the Museum of Arts and Design and has taught undergraduate and K-12 level visual arts extensively. www.natalianakazawa.com

Phillip Shung graduated from Hampton University with a degree in Art in 1996 and since that time, his mantra has been to communicate intelligently to the masses. His career has spanned many roles in the creative design field ranging from Creative Director for Vibe Magazine to Promotion Art Director at Women’s Wear Daily/WWD. Shung has also done significant design work in fashion for brands like Enyce and Avirex as well as websites for NAS and Destiny’s Child.  In 2001, Shung founded Sundree Brand Solutions focusing on all aspects of advertising, editorial, print and website design. http://folio.pixod.com

NOTE: all field trips are mandatory for students who do not have prior commitments. Trips are optional for mentors, parents, and teachers. There may be limited spots for friends/siblings on trips with advance permission.

Detailed flyers will be distributed at least 2 weeks before each trip.
